The video installation Copycat follows the events of a legal dispute between the artist/filmmaker Sarah Morris and six origami artists.
Sarah Morris is arguing with the plaintiffs lawyer about her work series 'Origami'. In which she took folding plans of various origami artists and reproduced them as large colorful paintings. While both parties claim justice to be on their side the judiciary seems only to be interested in an orderly formal legal process.
The fictionalized retelling negotiates questions of intellectual property, copyright and artistic process.
Ultimately, to set without precedent. While the spectators, all of whom refer to works of art whose copyright status is similarly complicated, insinuate a conflictual history between property and thought.
In contrast the small colorful origami figures suggest a different way out. These objects, titled in love to Sarah Morris and Noboru Miyajima (or the respective origami artist) are reprints of the ‘Origami’ paintings by Sarah Morris, which were folded back to the figures they were supposed to become.
